The Diocese of Aliwal through the leadership of Bishop Michael Wustenberg founded Mt. Carmel Youth Centre in 2011 with the intention to address the socio-economic challenges and limited prospects for children and youth within the geographical location of the Diocese of Aliwal.  The former farm buildings were re-constructed into an environmentally friendly centre with an aim of providing space for education and learning for children and young people.

Mount Carmel Youth Centre is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) 117—910, registered with the NPO Directorate of South African Department of Social Development and Special Programmes on 13 April 2013. The centre is governed by a Board that provides governance support to the Mt Carmel Youth Centre staff.
